Not sure if your child will commit to surfing regularly? Though they are China foam surfboards and you may occasionally get the stink-eye from the purist surfers, these foam surfboards are very affordable, well built, and great for beginners (kids approx 70-90 lbs). Easy to carry (lightweight) and a great starter board. You can buy them on Amazon or sometimes at Costco. They even sell a Barbie wavestorm!
